Juba, South Sudan, June 25, 2012 – IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, is training bankers in South Sudan to help them understand and introduce credit and trade finance products that will support the growth of small and medium sized enterprises in the country, encouraging job creation and a stronger economy.

IFC and the South Sudan Business Forum organized a five-day training program attended by representatives from 15 banks, including the Central Bank of South Sudan. The training is the first of a planned series of initiatives designed to increase access to finance for smaller businesses in South Sudan, which often lack the financial support they need to grow.

IFC’s Director of Easter and Southern Africa, Jean Philippe Prosper, said, “These partnerships will support the growth of smaller businesses in South Sudan, giving them the chance to grow, plan ahead, and hire more employees. Working with local banks to help them develop products and enhance services for smaller businesses is a major focus of IFC’s work in Africa.”

Director General for Supervision, Research and Statistics of the Central Bank of South Sudan, Daniel Kech Puoch, said, “Micro and small businesses are the backbone of every economy and we believe that developing and equipping our bankers with the skills to better serve this segment will have a positive impact on the economic development of South Sudan.

The training was organized by IFC’s Africa Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Program, which supports commercial banks seeking to establish or expand their MSME banking services while maintaining or improving the quality of their portfolio. Since 2006, the program has provided advisory services to and invested more than $100 million in 22 banks in 16 countries across Africa.

The training also included a session from IFC’s Trade Finance program.

IFC is supporting private sector development in South Sudan and in seven other countries in sub Saharan through its Conflict Affected States in Africa (CASA) Initiative. CASA helps countries recovering from conflict create the right conditions for business growth and supports small and medium enterprises.  In South Sudan, IFC is helping iattract investment and is facilitating public-private partnerships to spur infrastructure development.

South Sudan marked its 10th anniversary on July 9, 2021 as one of the world’s poorest countries with 8 million people, or two thirds of the population, dependent on humanitarian aid. The United Nations Children Fund warns that about 300,000 children under the age of five are at risk of starvation. And Tendayi Sengwe, who works with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in South Sudan, says the group has worked with the people in southern Sudan “since the 1980s, before South Sudan was a country, and always in response to the needs caused by conflict and violence”. He says “the scars of violence” dominate their lives. In 2020, women and children comprised nearly a quarter of the patients treated by the ICRC.

Deutsche Welle’s Cristina Krippahl writes that some experts see little hope for the country as long as the current politicians remain in power. “You should give room to a new crop of leaders who’ll reflect with a new mindset the reality and the diversities of a post-conflict South Sudan,” Andrews Atta-Asamoah, Senior Researcher at the South African Institute for Security Studies, said. “That is what they really need at the moment.”

A statement of congratulations on the 10th anniversary from the “Troika” (United States, United Kingdom, and Norway) says that while the first ten years of the country’s history have seen much suffering, ” through it all, the South Sudanese people have shown resilience”. The Troika says that the great challenge now facing South Sudan is to recapture the sense of unity, strength, and hope that prevailed on July 9 ten years ago.

Independence followed 40 years of conflict with the authoritarian rulers of Sudan, and internal conflict has marred most of the years since. Peacebuilders in South Sudan, and their well-wishers around the world, hope that the 2020 peace agreement among warring factions will hold and the legacy of war can at last be defeated

Learn about some practical strategies you can use to handle conflict in the workplace.

1. Talk with the other person.

  • Ask the other person to name a time when it would be convenient to meet.
  • Arrange to meet in a place where you won’t be interrupted.

2. Focus on behavior and events, not on personalities.

  • Say “When this happens …” instead of “When you do …”
  • Describe a specific instance or event instead of generalizing.

3. Listen carefully.

  • Listen to what the other person is saying instead of getting ready to react.
  • Avoid interrupting the other person.
  • After the other person finishes speaking, rephrase what was said to make sure you understand it.
  • Ask questions to clarify your understanding.

4. Identify points of agreement and disagreement.

  • Summarize the areas of agreement and disagreement.
  • Ask the other person if he or she agrees with your assessment.
  • Modify your assessment until both of you agree on the areas of conflict.

5. Prioritize the areas of conflict.

  • Discuss which areas of conflict are most important to each of you to resolve.

6. Develop a plan to work on each conflict.

  • Start with the most important conflict.
  • Focus on the future.
  • Set up future meeting times to continue your discussions.

7. Follow through on your plan.

  • Stick with the discussions until you’ve worked through each area of conflict.
  • Maintain a collaborative, “let’s-work-out-a-solution” attitude.

8. Build on your success.

  • Look for opportunities to point out progress.
  • Compliment the other person’s insights and achievements.
  • Congratulate each other when you make progress, even if it’s just a small step. Your hard work will pay off when scheduled discussions eventually give way to ongoing, friendly communication.

Nairobi — A ready-to-use geographic information system to facilitate the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines is proving effective in South Sudan and could be applied in other challenging contexts, its developers say.

The Integrated Humanitarian Data Package (IHDP) aims to provide quick and easy access to key geographic data that supports the planning and delivery of vaccination programmes.

“A guiding principle in the project has been effective, efficient and equitable support to COVID-19 vaccine roll-out,” said Nick McWilliam, the project’s lead at MapAction, a UK-based non-profit organisation that specialises in providing mapping for humanitarian emergencies.

“We see the IHDP as being a part of a broad collective effort to increase national capacities to deliver vaccines from ‘airport to arm’.”

McWilliam added that the project, which started in late 2020, uses mapping and geographic information to support “last mile” vaccine delivery efforts.

He explained that in South Sudan, COVID-19 vaccine delivery has challenges such as locating priority populations including those over 55 years old, ascertaining how many vaccines will be needed in each district, and where the clinics are located, and finding available transport and storage facilities.

“Projects relying on data in these contexts typically spend 70-80 per cent of their time sourcing and preparing data before it can be put to use, leading to delays, extra cost, wasted skills and duplication,” McWilliam said.

The IHDP was designed for use by public health specialists planning and delivering South Sudan’s national vaccination plan, but its developers say lessons from it can be applied to many other countries facing logistics challenges.

The South Sudan pilot project was funded by a grant from the Calleva Foundation, with the main aim of anticipating the data needs for vaccine roll-out, according to MapAction.

The initial step was to identify which data themes would be needed for vaccine planning. Publicly available sources were used to identify relevant datasets for evaluation, followed by a process of selection, cleaning and enhancement.

“For example, all layers were given a set of ‘placename codes’– a consistent set of index numbers to accurately cross-reference names of villages, towns and administrative areas to avoid the confusion of different spellings and languages,” McWilliam said.

The datasets were also put into a consistent format, with tools to make them quickly accessible to data users, for example in geographic information systems in plain language narrative describing each dataset and its intended uses in detail.

Felix Emeka Anyiam, a research and data scientist at the Centre for Health and Development, University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, said the tool could address logistical inefficiencies in COVID-19 vaccine delivery.

According to Anyiam, data is a critical component of healthcare provision but Sub-Saharan Africa is yet to fully embrace it.

“I am hoping [the] IDHP team will use this opportunity as a platform for sensitisation too,” he told SciDev.Net. “For example, in my region, many healthcare workers are more interested in their clinical work than data collection as they get very little or no support from the government to do this.”

Irregular power supply, and poor knowledge and limited supply of information technology gadgets are some of the setbacks, he explained, adding that developers of the tool should aid capacity building in accurate and timely data collection.

Out-of-home VR destination Sandbox VR today announced an additional $37 million funding round that the company is using to support its continued expansion. In addition to its dozen worldwide locations, Sandbox VR says it’s working to nearly doubling that.

The Series B funding was led by a16z, and includes participation by Alibaba and Craft. According to Crunchbase data, this puts their lifetime outside financing to around $120 million.

Like pretty much everyone in the out-of-home entertainment sector, Sandbox VR went through its own share of financial challenges over the past year due to COVID-19 closures. It both filed for, and reemerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy following debt restructure.

“We are excited to use the latest round of funding for content development, cutting edge technology and accelerated growth,” says Steve Zhao, CEO and founder of Sandbox VR. “With more stores on the way, we’ll be ramping up our internal studios as well as developing our SDK to open up publishing in the near future.”

And it appears Sandbox VR is making a quick comeback. The company opened three locations in July—Austin, Las Vegas, and Shanghai—and is aiming to open ten more as it enters 2022. Currently, the company operates 12 locations across North America and Asia. Paramus (New Jersey), Toronto (Canada) and London (UK) locations are marked as “coming soon.”

The fresh funding round suggests that VR arcades may be seeing a renewal in investor confidence, although Sandbox VR is probably one of the best-positioned in the sector due to its relatively small physical footprint requirements, in-house content studio, and licensed IP such as its Star Trek: Discovery multiplayer missions.

Sandbox VR has survived The VOID, one of its biggest competitors (certainly the most flashy), which permanently closed all locations worldwide last year. Coincidentally, The VOID’s flagship space at the Grand Canal Shoppes in Las Vegas is now a Sandbox VR location.

A collection of textile samples lay spread out on the table – Samsa was a travelling salesman – and above it there hung a picture that he had recently cut out of an illustrated magazine and housed in a nice, gilded frame. It showed a lady fitted out with a fur hat and fur boa who sat upright, raising a heavy fur muff that covered the whole of her lower arm towards the viewer.

Gregor then turned to look out the window at the dull weather. Drops of rain could be heard hitting the pane, which made him feel quite sad. “How about if I sleep a little bit longer and forget all this nonsense”, he thought, but that was something he was unable to do because he was used to sleeping on his right, and in his present state couldn’t get into that position. However hard he threw himself onto his right, he always rolled back to where he was.

The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence.

One morning, when Gregor Samsa woke from troubled dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin. He lay on his armour-like back, and if he lifted his head a little he could see his brown belly, slightly domed and divided by arches into stiff sections.
